Do you know which poker hands are the strongest? And whether a flush beats a straight? If not, then you should learn it. When playing poker, it’s essential that you know what a good poker hand is. And that you know about the hand ranking. The optimal thing is that it comes to you completely automatically. Then you can focus solely on making correct decisions in the game, which will ultimately give you a successful result.
Even if you think you have mastered the strongest cards, as a beginner you can quickly have doubts. When you sit with a bit of sweat on your forehead and try to remember ‘The Five Golden’, hand ranking is not a matter of course. That’s why we’ll explain what poker hands are to get you off to the best possible start. In addition, you can find various sites on the Internet where you can play for fun and practice hand ranking.
When it comes to learning hand ranking in poker, there’s only one way. And it’s about to tick. Here you get an overview of the different hands, their names and their rank to each other. We start with the strongest combination, then the second strongest and so on.
Five cards in numerical order and with the same suit, which can be ten diamonds, jack diamonds, lady diamonds, king diamonds and ace diamonds.
Five cards in numerical order and of the same colour. It could be six clubs, seven clubs, eight clubs, nine clubs and ten clubs.
Four cards of the same kind, but all with different colours. A combination could be four sevens or four jacks, where there is a clubs, diamonds, spades and a lady.
A pair combined with three identical cards. It could be three kings and two fives.
A combination of five cards of the same suit. An example could be five different clubs or five different diamonds.
Five cards in numerical order, but without the same suit. For example, six diamonds, seven clubs, eight hearts, nine hearts and ten spades.
Three cards of the same strength. A combination could be three twos or three kings.
Two cards of the same value with two other cards of the same value. That is two tens and two ladies.
Two identical cards regardless of suit. For example, two sevens or two ladies.
If no player can make a combination of the above, the player with the highest card wins. The cards are put in numerical order, with the ace being the highest card.
If you play Texas Hold’em and come to the showdown, it is the player with the highest ranking who wins. If two players have gone for a flush, it is the player with the highest total value who wins.
Player A holds the following hand:
Player B holds the following hand:
In this case, it is player B who wins, as this player has the highest pair. And hence the highest value.
Player A holds the following hand:
Player B holds the following hand:
You should notice that four hearts, nine hearts, king hearts and ace hearts, are community cards. Therefore, it is decided from seven hearts and eight hearts. And thus player B wins the pot.
Remember that the highest card is an ace, then a king, and so on. That is, a two is the lowest card that you can have. Moreover, it does not matter what colours your cards have. In poker, the red and black cards do not matter in terms of ranking and strength.
The vast majority find a challenge with straight, flush and straight flush. The names can be similar, just as the combinations can have common features. And even if a straight has a higher total value than a flush, it is the player with a flush who wins. So remember that straight doesn’t beat a flush.
In addition, we have included the math, and it is far easier to get a straight than a flush. You will statistically hit a flush twice, for every three times you hit a straight. However, both combinations are strong hands. And you will be able to complete a round and at the same time win pools with these hands.
However, this does not mean that this is the case. You can easily be beaten, for instance, by a house. This combination is seen fairly often, which is why you may not feel on safe ground with a flush or a straight.
It is important that you know the strength of the starting hands. For it is those who determine the development of the round. And when you know what the chance of the different combinations is, it gives you a much better starting point. Some poker hands you will experience pretty much every time you play. For example:
Although it is often a starting hand, such a hand rarely has enough strength for you to win the pot. Unless you choose to bluff. And then suddenly the game is something else. But it takes experience to complete a bluff. And if you’re a beginner, we recommend waiting until you have more experience. There’s no need to play smart right away.
Just as there are some poker hands you’ll often meet, there are others you’ll rarely meet. And maybe never in fact. It is:
If you in Texas Hold’em get to the river, you will only get a royal flush, one in more than 30,000 times. Maybe that tells you something about how hard it is.
Whether you were to sit with a royal flush or a full house, you may not win. Because poker, as you know, allows making the other participants to fold if you bluff. And then you can suddenly win with a worse hand. Or lose with one of the better poker hands.
Although poker hands have the same value in principle, there may be deviations if you play a particular poker variant. Among other things, it matters whether you play Omaha, Seven Card Stud or Texas Hold’em. When you play the latter, you are playing according to the traditional hand ranking. And this combination of strength should sit on the spine. Then you are never in doubt about who will win the pot at the showdown.
Moreover, you need to memorize the strengths, as it happens more often in Texas Hold’em that two players sit with almost identical hands. This is because all players share five cards – the so-called community cards. If it should be the case that two players sit with the same pair, it is the player with the second-highest pair who wins. If it is also a draw, players will have to share the pot.
As mentioned, when you play Texas Hold’em, it is your Texas Hold’em starting hands that have a big impact on your game. And how to act about betting size before and after the flop. The best-starting hands you can get in Texas Hold’em are two aces. If that’s not possible, two kings or two ladies are almost as good. The next best-starting hands are high cards of the same suit. And especially if there is a possibility of a high straight or a high flush.
Of course, if you like to play Texas Hold’em, there are some alternatives. Or variants to the traditional ones, which are No-Limit Texas Hold’em and All-in Texas Hold’em. Whether you want to play a variation of the traditional game or not, the ground rules of the game are the same. But there’s a little twist that can make the game a bit more fun for the seasoned and experienced.
When you play another form of Texas Hold’em, there will be a change in the probabilities and statistics when it comes to the starting hands. Therefore, it is not recommended that you as a beginner jump into a new version of classic Texas Hold’em. You must always be good at figuring out the different chances and cards.
As examples of variants, you will find:
At Aviation, each player is dealt four cards at the beginning of the game. Before the flop, throw away a card. And so should you after the flop. That is, you are left with two cards after the flop.
If you play Speed Hold’em, you will be dealt four cards at the beginning of the game. After that, throw away two cards immediately. Then five community cards and only one betting round are given before the showdown. This version requires precision and confidence.
Whether you want to play a variation of Texas Hold’em or not, hopefully, you’ve got the urge to learn the strength of the combinations. So you can show how to play a successful game Texas Hold’em.
